THAILAND – The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued an urgent warning as a powerful monsoon system sweeps across much of the country, bringing severe thunderstorms, flood risks, and waves reaching up to two meters. Bangkok, the Eastern provinces, and the South are expected to be hit hardest.
Monsoon Unleashes Its Dangerous Side
Currently, the monsoon depression stretches across the lower Central region, the upper South, and the East of Thailand. At the same time, the southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, the South, and the Gulf of Thailand. This weather pattern is causing locally intense rainfall in several regions.
Authorities are urging residents in the Central region—including Bangkok and its surrounding areas—as well as the East and South to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against potential flooding.
Regional Breakdown: Where the Storms Will Strike Hardest
The 24-hour forecast paints a clear picture of the areas most at risk:
- Central Region: Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, and Bangkok are bracing for severe thunderstorms.
- East: Widespread storms are predicted from Nakhon Nayok to Trat.
- South: The west coast, including Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga, is expected to experience the most intense weather.
Only the North of the country is likely to be spared, with just isolated showers forecast.
Danger at Sea: Waves Over Two Meters
A serious warning has also been issued for maritime activities. In the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, wave heights of around one meter are expected, rising to over two meters during storms. The TMD strongly advises all vessels to exercise extreme caution and avoid areas affected by thunderstorms.
The eastern coastal provinces of Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat are particularly at risk, as waves can become dangerously high during storms.
Temperatures and Outlook
Despite the severe weather, temperatures will remain typically tropical. Bangkok can expect nighttime lows of 24–25°C and daytime highs of 33–35°C. Northern Thailand may see temperatures up to 36°C, while the South will be slightly cooler at 31–35°C.
The TMD will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue further warnings should conditions worsen.
