Shock as Chumphon village savers lose life savings in royal bank crisis

Village savers left empty-handed as royal bank blocks withdrawals

A devastating financial crisis has erupted in Chumphon province, as nearly 50 villagers find themselves unable to withdraw their hard-earned savings from a rural bank founded under a royal initiative. The shocking move has left locals reeling, facing losses that reportedly add up to almost one million Baht—a sum that represents years of sacrifice for these tight-knit families.

For many in this normally peaceful community, the bank had once embodied security and trust. Now, however, the mood is one of anguished disbelief. The chairman’s sudden disappearance only deepens the mystery, fuelling fears that something far more sinister than mere mismanagement is at play.

Royal initiative unravels after two decades of trust

The troubled village bank first opened its doors in 2001, the result of a royal effort to promote prudent saving and financial stability in Chumphon’s rural heartland. For years, the villagers placed their faith—and their wages—into this institution, believing it protected them against hardship and gave hope to their children’s futures.

That trust persisted for over two decades, as villagers diligently deposited money year after year. But at the start of 2025, panic took hold. Residents who tried to withdraw their own savings were suddenly told it was no longer possible. The chairman blamed unpaid loans for causing liquidity problems, but that explanation failed to reassure the anxious depositors—especially once he vanished from public view.

Families in distress as bank failures wreck lives

The devastation is particularly cruel for those whose dreams depended on their savings. Ms. Nitaya, a loyal saver since 2006, had painstakingly built up a sum amounting to 57,000 Baht. When she needed the money urgently for her mother’s knee operation, her request was rebuffed. ‘They only offered me small, inconsistent sums,’ she remembers, her voice breaking with frustration.

Even greater heartbreak befell Ms. Yupin, who had managed to accumulate 171,000 Baht over ten years. She, too, was told that no funds were available when she tried to withdraw her life savings for the second time ever. ‘I withdrew money just once before. Now, everything’s gone!’ she exclaimed, unable to hide her despair.

Police hunt missing chairman amid fraud fears

With hope fading, victims took their case to police in Chumphon in May 2025, providing account statements, savings books, and member lists as evidence. Officers arranged a crucial meeting at the district office, but the chairman—central figure in the scandal—failed to attend.

Their anxiety mounted when the chairman remained unreachable during a tense waiting period at the bank on September 25, 2025. His total absence stoked suspicions that this was not merely a case of bad lending. Authorities now openly consider the possibility of serious wrongdoing.

Experts warn of deeper crisis as villagers demand answers

Investigators now confront several troubling scenarios. Was the community bank undone by reckless lending to those who could never repay? Has someone within the organisation embezzled funds for unlawful purposes? Or is the failure the result of a broader lack of oversight and systemic collapse?

Police vow to leave no stone unturned, warning that if fraud is proven, the chairman could face many years behind bars. For Chumphon, this is a sobering lesson about the vulnerabilities of informal financial schemes—even those with royal backing.

For the villagers, shaken trust may be the deepest wound of all. As they wait for truth and justice, the loss of savings has pushed many to the brink of desperation—reminding Thailand that even the most cherished institutions are not immune to disaster.
