Bizarre ATM heist shakes Khon Kaen
Khon Kaen residents were left stunned early Sunday morning when a foreigner attempted an audacious ATM theft. The suspect, 40-year-old Dutch national Sijtse, chained a Siam Commercial Bank machine to his pickup truck and dragged it along Maliwan Road.
The metallic screech of the ATM across the asphalt roused nearby neighbours, who quickly alerted Ban Ped police. Authorities arrived within minutes to intercept the clumsy attempt.
Marital dispute at the heart of the crime
Police Colonel Pakpoom Decharuangsin confirmed Sijtse had legally lived in Thailand for six years. Investigators believe the robbery was fueled by a financial dispute with his Thai wife.
Reports indicate Sijtse had promised 10 million baht to his wife to open a restaurant on Pracha Samran Road. After arguments, he pretended to travel to Nong Khai but instead set out to steal cash from an ATM. Authorities stressed his wife was not involved.
The pickup truck used in the heist belonged to a relative and had been shared within the family, highlighting the amateur nature of the plan.
How the ill-fated heist unfolded

Sijtse looped heavy chains around the ATM, attached the other end to his pickup truck, and accelerated, dragging the machine roughly 20 metres down the road. The racket quickly drew attention, forcing him to abandon the attempt. Police found the suspect hiding by the roadside moments later.
Serious consequences loom for the Dutchman
Authorities are probing whether Sijtse acted alone. Regardless, he faces serious criminal charges. Attempted theft of bank property in Thailand can carry up to five years in prison and hefty fines for damages.
For a man who had spent six years building a life in Thailand, the consequences are severe. His attempt to solve personal problems with a reckless crime has left him facing potential years behind bars.
One local officer remarked, “We’ve never seen such a clumsy ATM theft,” underlining the absurdity of the plan.
