Dangerous Waves Spark Emergency at Karon Beach
A shocking incident at Phuket’s Karon Beach turned deadly after three tourists ignored red warning flags. Strong winds and towering waves created life-threatening currents, prompting lifeguards to raise the flags – a clear signal: swimming strictly prohibited.
Despite repeated warnings, the three men entered the treacherous waters. Within seconds, the violent currents pulled them out to sea, triggering a dramatic rescue operation by lifeguards. Eyewitnesses quickly alerted authorities, who acted immediately to save lives.
Two Tourists Rescued, One Still Missing
Lifeguards managed to reach two of the men, Ahmed Ramadhan Almeshkhas and Mohamed Ramadhan Almeshkhas, pulling them safely to shore. Mohamed sustained minor injuries and was treated at Patong Hospital, now in stable condition.
Tragically, the third tourist, Jasim Abdali Almeshkhas, remains missing. Authorities have launched a massive search operation along the coastline and surrounding waters. As hours pass without a trace, hopes of finding him alive are fading, leaving his family in agonising uncertainty.
Authorities Urge Tourists to Respect Warnings
Beach officials expressed frustration over the incident: “The red flags were clearly visible,” a local said. “Yet some tourists continue to ignore them – with potentially fatal consequences.”
This isn’t the first tragedy at Karon Beach. In July, two tourists drowned under similar circumstances, despite clear red-flag warnings. Lifeguards stress the importance of following safety signals: “The flags are not decorative; they are there to save lives.”
Phuket Currents Pose Serious Risks
Phuket’s west coast is notorious for dangerous rip currents, particularly during the rainy season from May to October. Even strong swimmers can be swept far from shore in seconds. Experts advise swimming parallel to the beach if caught in a rip current, rather than fighting it directly.
Tourists from regions without such strong currents often underestimate the risk, turning a brief lapse in judgment into a life-threatening situation.
