Systematic fraud exposed
A storm has erupted in Thailand after more than 20 furious victims filed complaints against a well-known developer, claiming they were conned out of millions. The scandal centres on luxury villas, each priced between 3 and 10 million Baht, that were never finished despite huge sums being paid.
On Thursday, victims brought their case to Police Major General Jruykiat Pankaeo, Deputy Director of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). According to their accounts, the company kept signing new contracts while halting construction projects midway, raking in fresh deposits from unsuspecting clients.
“This company has perfected a systematic fraud,” said lawyer Somyot Chaiyaphon, representing several of the victims. A Line group has now gathered more than 163 alleged victims seeking justice. Experts fear the total financial damage could climb well beyond the current 300 million Baht estimate.
Dreams turn into ruins
Among those left devastated is Saranya Promsuk, who says her dream home became a nightmare. “I signed the contract because of the positive online reviews,” she explained. Her villa, costing 4.7 million Baht, was supposed to be ready by February 2023. By then, she had already paid 4 million Baht. What she received instead was a bare shell – “no windows, no doors, no progress.”
The firm strung her along with false promises, first pledging to finish within three months, then by September 2023. Nothing materialised. Other customers say they faced shoddy workmanship and blatant cover-ups: cracks in walls simply painted over instead of repaired, while “innovations” were charged at a premium.
For many, the heartbreak is the same – money gone, no home to show for it.
Social media credibility
Part of what made the scam so convincing was the company’s seemingly solid reputation. With decades in the market, a Facebook page boasting nearly a million followers, and a functioning office, it looked every inch the real deal.
“That’s exactly what made this con so effective,” admitted one investigator. Even subcontractors fell victim: a roofer claims he was left 70,000 Baht out of pocket when the company failed to pay his wages. “They didn’t cover any labour costs,” he complained, with other craftsmen reporting similar treatment.
The glossy social media image, combined with a professional front, proved to be nothing but smoke and mirrors.
Police response
The growing group of victims has turned to the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD). While each case is technically a civil contract issue, the sheer number of complaints points to deliberate, large-scale fraud.
Police Major General Jruykiat said economic investigators may be called in. “We will follow all leads,” he pledged. But experts warn real estate scams are nothing new in Thailand, with fraudsters often hiding behind legal loopholes to dodge responsibility.
