Since the 1950s, Thailand has steadily developed its rainmaking program, operated by the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation (DRRAA). While no official global ranking exists, the country is seen as a leader in Southeast Asia for cloud seeding operations. Using weather radar, satellite imagery, and regional command centers, missions are launched only when atmospheric conditions are suitable.
The system combines modern meteorological tools with practical deployment, ensuring results are monitored through rainfall measurements, watershed inflows, and reservoir levels. Regular evaluations keep the program aligned with international standards.
Royal Rainmaking expansion: more flights, more rainfall
For 2024, the DRRAA plans more flight days, additional crews, and flexible schedules. Priority will go to provinces suffering from low soil moisture and shrinking reservoirs. During the rainy season—and even in transitional periods—teams will conduct intensified missions whenever suitable clouds appear.
Technically, Thailand relies on proven cloud seeding methods: salt-based hygroscopic flares that stimulate droplet formation in warm clouds, supplemented by other agents when conditions allow. Operations follow strict safety standards, avoiding flood-prone basins and thunderstorm cores.
Cloud seeding as a lifeline for Thai farmers
For crops like rice, sugarcane, and cassava, reliable rainfall is crucial. Successful seeding missions can secure planting schedules, reduce drought stress, and support irrigation supplies. Officials highlight that measurable local increases in rainfall have been observed, though outcomes depend heavily on weather conditions.
Cloud seeding does not create clouds but enhances natural rainfall potential. Environmental studies suggest minimal ecological impact when used properly, with agents deployed in very low concentrations. Continuous monitoring ensures transparency and safety.
Strategic goal: water security in rural Thailand
For many farming communities, the decisive factor is whether reservoirs are filled and fields receive timely irrigation. With the expansion of the Royal Rainmaking Program, Thailand aims to protect its agricultural backbone against erratic monsoon patterns and climate-related risks—through science-driven, weather-dependent interventions.
