The coronavirus remains present—even five years after the pandemic began. Since the end of summer holidays and with the onset of autumn, infection numbers in Germany have risen noticeably. The latest report from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) shows that SARS-CoV-2 activity is increasing, albeit from a low baseline. The main driver behind this surge is a new variant known as XFG or Stratus.
Stratus is a recombinant of the previously known LF.7 and LP.8.1.2 lineages. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Stratus carries specific spike protein mutations that may help the virus evade the immune system more effectively than prior variants. Within three months, Stratus became the dominant variant in Germany, accounting for around 65 percent of COVID-19 infections, according to the RKI. The variant is also spreading rapidly internationally, with strong growth across Europe.
New COVID Symptoms: “Razor Blade” Throat Pain
Even though leading experts and the WHO provide reassurance, infection with Stratus should not be taken lightly. While there is no evidence of more severe illness or higher mortality, symptoms have shifted. Notably, many patients report extremely sore throats described as “razor-blade-like”—a new symptom not seen in previous variants.
Other common symptoms include fever, dry cough, fatigue, sore throat, and diarrhea. Antigen rapid tests remain reliable for detecting Stratus, provided they are stored correctly and not expired. Isolation is currently no longer mandated, and treatment is similar to a common cold: rest, tea, and patience.
Who Should Get Vaccinated Now—and Why
The Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) recommends booster shots specifically for people over 60, those with pre-existing conditions, and healthcare workers. Vaccination should be about twelve months after the last dose or infection—ideally in autumn. Experts believe current COVID-19 vaccines continue to protect against severe illness from Stratus and the previous Nimbus variant.
Interestingly, Stratus and Nimbus now have informal nicknames derived from cloud types, a trend encouraged by the international scientific community. Ryan Gregory, a biologist at the University of Guelph, explains that this approach draws attention to major variants. Both variants are currently competing globally and could trigger new waves of infection. In Germany, targeted vaccination campaigns and caution among high-risk groups will largely determine the spread of the virus.
