BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand and Russia have agreed to boost the number of Russian visitors to two million by the end of 2026.
Tourism Minister Surasak Phanthacharoenworakul met Russian Ambassador Jewgeni Tomichin at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to discuss closer cooperation on flights, security, sport, culture, and education.
Boosting air links between the two countries
Thailand and Russia plan to expand air connections to make travel easier for tourists. By the end of 2026, two million Russian tourists are expected to visit Thailand.
Thailand will tailor its cultural and culinary offerings, media, and creative industries to the Russian market to attract more visitors.
Improving safety for tourists
Minister Surasak demanded the highest possible level of security for visitors. Safety measures at tourist sites will be improved and laws strictly enforced.
Thai authorities will coordinate closely with the Russian embassy and exchange information faster.
Winter sports cooperation agreed
A joint action plan for sports cooperation from 2026 to 2028 aims to promote the exchange of athletes, coaches, and specialists. Focus is on winter sports like ice hockey and skating.
Russia is considered particularly experienced in these sports. The Russian ambassador invited the Thai minister to the 14th International Sports Forum in October 2026 in Krasnoyarsk.
Long-term tourism plan prepared
Thailand and Russia are preparing a joint action plan for tourism cooperation for the years 2026 to 2030. The signing is being prepared.
The third session of the joint working group on tourism will also take place in Russia. Both sides aim to further expand their travel cooperation.
Culture and education on the agenda
The talks went beyond tourism and sports. Culture, education, and people-to-people exchange were also on the agenda.
Thailand will promote its culture, cuisine, media offerings, and creative work more strongly in Russia. The goal is to give visitors a positive image of the country.
Celebrating 130 years of diplomacy
Thailand and Russia plan joint celebrations for the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Events covering culture, food, and sports are planned, as well as trips along routes linked to royal travels.
The planned celebrations are intended to strengthen ties between the two countries and create long-term mutual benefits for the people.
