BANGKOK, THAILAND – Flash flood and runoff warnings for 27 provinces from Aug 6-9 as the weather office forecasts heavy to very heavy rain and high seas.
The National Water Resources Office issued the alert for the period Aug 6-9. Many areas face heavy rain that could trigger flash floods and mountain runoff.
Areas near slopes, waterways and low-lying zones are most at risk. The weather office followed up with Warning No 1 for heavy rain and high seas.
Andaman Sea and Gulf with high waves
In the northern Andaman Sea waves reach two to three metres, over three metres during thunderstorms. In the southern Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand waves hit about two metres, over two metres during storms.
Ship captains must navigate with care and avoid thunderstorm areas. Small boats in the northern Andaman Sea should stay in port as seas build.
Northeast sees very heavy rain
Thunderstorms cover most of the Northeast. Heavy rain falls in Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani. Parts of Bueng Kan and Nakhon Phanom may see very heavy rain.
Morning temperatures range from 23 to 27 Celsius, climbing to 29 to 34 Celsius. Southwesterly winds blow at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
North and central expect storms
Widespread thunderstorms hit the North. Heavy rain is possible locally in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun.
In the central region thunderstorms cover wide areas with locally heavy rain, especially in Nakhon Sawan, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Nakhon Pathom. Morning temperatures in the North: 23 to 27 Celsius, afternoon 32 to 35 Celsius. In the centre: 24 to 27 Celsius morning, 34 to 36 Celsius afternoon.
East coast with rain and two-metre waves
Thunderstorms hit most of the East with locally heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi and Trat. Southwesterly winds blow at 20 to 35 kilometres per hour.
Off the east coast waves reach about two metres, over two metres during thunderstorms. Morning temperatures 24 to 28 Celsius, afternoon 31 to 35 Celsius.
South Thailand: West coast harder hit
Widespread thunderstorms and locally heavy rain hit the west coast along the Andaman Sea in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket and Krabi. From Phang Nga northward southwesterly winds blow at 20 to 40 kilometres per hour, waves two to three metres and over three metres in storms.
From Phuket southward waves reach about two metres, over two metres in storms. On the east coast of the South, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat face locally heavy rain. Waves there are about one metre, offshore one to two metres and over two metres in storms.
Bangkok not spared from storms
Bangkok and its surrounding areas can expect widespread thunderstorms with locally heavy rain. Morning temperatures 26 to 28 Celsius, afternoon 33 to 35 Celsius.
Southwesterly winds reach 10 to 25 kilometres per hour. The weather pattern stems from a monsoon trough over northern Thailand and Laos feeding into a low-pressure area off northern Vietnam. At the same time the southwest monsoon over Thailand, the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand strengthens.
Typhoon Dolphin passes Thailand by
Typhoon Dolphin moves toward Japan and China. According to the weather office’s updated track, the cyclone will not reach Thailand.
The forecast covers the next 24 hours. The warning for heavy rain, flash floods and flooding in 27 provinces remains in place from Aug 6-9.
