BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand has tightened exit rules for minors. Anyone leaving Suvarnabhumi Airport with a child now needs more paperwork — and there is a concrete reason why.
Since August 3, Thai children under 18 must show a birth certificate at passport control at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The original, a copy, or even a photo on a phone is accepted. Before, a passport alone was enough.
Immigration announces immediate change
The announcement came directly from the immigration office at the international departure area of Suvarnabhumi. The new checks take effect immediately with no transition period.

Consent letter needed in some cases
In certain cases, officers demand a written consent letter from the father, mother, or both. The letter must be issued or certified by a government authority. A handwritten letter is not enough.
The immigration office left open exactly when this document applies. In practice, officers likely demand it when a child travels without both parents — with grandparents, one parent alone, or another guardian.
Anyone who wants to be safe should get the letter in advance from the district office.
Why Thailand cracked down
Behind the rule is more than bureaucracy. Thailand has been a transit country for human trafficking for years — children are also affected. The US Trafficking in Persons Report has long ranked Thailand at Tier 2.
That means authorities take steps but do not yet fully meet the minimum standards against human trafficking. The new document requirements aim to prevent minors from leaving the country without their parents’ knowledge or consent.
The immigration office names child protection as the explicit goal of the measure.
Only at Suvarnabhumi for now
The official announcement refers explicitly to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Whether Don Mueang or other international airports like Phuket and Chiang Mai will follow is not yet officially confirmed.
Anyone departing from another airport should still carry the same documents — the rule is likely to come nationwide.
What families should carry now
For departure with a child under 18, this preparation is recommended from now on: save the child’s birth certificate as a copy or photo on the phone. If the child travels without one parent or with only one, carry a government-certified consent letter from the absent parent.
The district office issues the letter — in Bangkok the Khet administration, in rural areas the Amphoe.
For families with German-Thai children, the same applies: the rule affects Thai citizens under 18, regardless of whether they also hold another citizenship.
