CHIANG RAI, Thailand – Heavy rain in late July 2026 sent the Lao and Korn rivers over their banks. At least 50 homes in Pa O Don Chai subdistrict are now underwater.
The governor ordered immediate relief measures as floodwater swamped low-lying areas. Local authorities are rushing damage assessments.
Homes flooded after rivers overflow
In the village of Rong Khun along the Lao River, officials reported ten flooded households. Another 40 households in San Sali village on the Korn River took in water.
The worst-hit zones are riverside and low-lying spots. Local administrations and the disaster prevention office are on site evaluating damage.
Mayor blames days of torrential rain
Pa O Don Chai mayor Sirimongkol Khamdee said the rapid water rise came from days of nonstop rain.
The Korn River overflowed its banks and flooded neighbouring houses.

Behind the Rong Khun market, the Lao River also shot up fast. Several spots along the banks and in depressions filled with water.
Governor orders fast emergency aid
Governor Chuchip Phongchai told the disaster prevention office and all relevant agencies to watch the situation closely. Damage reports must be speeded up.
Affected residents will get support as quickly as possible under the governor’s order. Local teams are conducting damage assessments and prepping relief efforts.
Water levels could keep rising
Authorities are maintaining round-the-clock monitoring. Rain keeps falling in the upper parts of the province, which could push water levels even higher.
People living along the Lao and Korn still face flood danger. The provincial leadership warned everyone in risky areas to stay cautious.
