PATTAYA, Thailand – Thai Immigration is warning foreign tourists about travel packages sold at rock-bottom prices or from unverified sellers. The warning comes after a blackmail case in Pattaya where three tourists were lured by a cheap deal. All five suspects are now in custody.
Police Colonel Parinya Klinkaesorn, spokesperson for Immigration Bureau 3, issued a blunt warning to foreign visitors. The scam is a growing headache for authorities.

I want to warn foreign tourists to be more careful when choosing travel packages, especially offers that are unusually cheap or from providers whose identity cannot be verified.

Criminals pose as legitimate tour operators, advertise prices far below market rates, and strike once tourists are already in the country. The price advantage evaporates – replaced by terror.
How the scam works
Investigators say the pattern is always similar. A fake operator offers a complete package – flight, hotel, transfer – at a suspiciously low price. Payment is required upfront.
After landing, no regular driver shows up. Instead, an accomplice of the gang picks them up. The tourists are taken to a private house, held against their will, and pressured into having relatives back home wire ransom money.
The thugs do not play nice. They use physical violence, film their victims, and send the recordings to families abroad to force payment. In the latest Pattaya case, the gang demanded around 2.5 million baht.
How to spot a legitimate operator
Anyone booking a Thailand package that is not from a known brand should follow simple rules, say authorities. The provider needs a verifiable business address, a license number, and reviews older than a few weeks.
Payments sent only to private accounts, via crypto, or through messaging apps are a red flag. The price itself is also a giveaway.
A package offered for an amount that barely covers the bare flight cost should make anyone suspicious. Legitimate operators calculate transparently and can explain how a price is built. Contracts should be in writing, invoices properly issued.
What to do at the airport
Another sensitive moment is arrival. Immigration advises against being picked up at the airport by unknown people whose assignment is not clearly documented. Anyone who booked a transfer ticket should look for a sign with their name and the company logo.
When in doubt, take a regular taxi or a Grab car from the official stand. Family or friends back home should know where you are staying and when you plan to check in.
A long silence gives relatives the chance to react early if something is wrong. That contact abroad is what led to the victims’ rescue in the Pattaya case.
Thailand remains a safe travel destination
Authorities stress that Thailand remains a safe country to visit. Entry checks follow international standards, backed by national and international security databases. Anyone not on a wanted list and without relevant prior convictions can enter without problems.
Cases like the one in Pattaya, says Immigration, happen only after legal entry – and are pursued consistently. The Immigration spokesperson also vowed to crack down hard on cross-border crime and so-called grey capital groups.
Every violation will be punished, regardless of the nationality of the perpetrator or the victim.
