PATTAYA, THAILAND – Australian national Simon Peter Carman awaits trial in Thailand following the discovery of a body and his subsequent arrest at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Police in Pattaya discovered a black suitcase filled with disturbing contents next to railway tracks, an event that deeply affected the officers involved. At the time of the discovery, Simon Peter Carman, a 46-year-old Australian citizen, was already in the transit area of Suvarnabhumi Airport, en route to Perth with scratches on his body and a Jetstar ticket. In the early morning hours of June 25, police stated that Carman met 17-year-old Thanchanok Donhomla, nicknamed “Cake,” in the Jomtien Beach area. Police allege that a dispute escalated over the agreed-upon sum for sexual services, with Carman only willing to pay 500 Baht out of a supposed 1,000 Baht agreement. He denies killing her.

Thai law stipulates the death penalty for premeditated murder, carried out by lethal injection since the abolition of firing squads in 2003. The last execution in Thailand took place on June 18, 2018. While death sentences continue to be issued, including one in March 2025 for a Malaysian national, no executions have occurred since 2018, creating a de facto moratorium.
Police have up to 84 days to complete their investigation before formal court proceedings commence. Carman is being held without bail at the Pattaya Remand Prison, with consular assistance provided by the Australian consulate. It is unclear if he can afford a lawyer, as he reportedly told police he has little money. The trial is in its early stages, and the outcome remains uncertain.
