RATCHABURI, Thailand – A 34-year-old monk weighing 260 kilograms has sought urgent medical assistance, fearing immobility due to his extreme weight.
Hilferuf aus dem Tempel
Health officials, village volunteers, and local representatives recently visited a temple in the Ban Pong district. They examined the severely overweight monk, who becomes exhausted after only a few steps. His condition has dramatically worsened over the years. He is now to be transferred to Ban Pong Hospital as quickly as possible. The monk suffers from high blood pressure and has already lost sight in his left eye. He confessed that the fear of becoming completely bedridden is consuming him.
He is concerned about becoming a burden on his fellow monks if he requires full-time care. He sees a major operation as his only way out. The man has lived as an ordained monk for 14 years and has successfully completed the second level of Buddhist study exams. However, his weight problems began much earlier. Already as a teenager, he weighed over 100 kilograms.
After that, he gained five to ten kilograms every year – relentlessly and with severe consequences. His body is suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and glaucoma. Doctors also identify a significantly increased risk of diabetes. He can barely fulfill his monastic duties anymore, and daily life in the temple has become an ordeal for him.
260 Kilo und die Angst vor der Bettlägerigkeit
About two years ago, the monk was already in Ban Pong Hospital due to severe eye pain for several months. He lost 20 kilograms at that time through a strict diet. However, upon returning to the temple, his weight ballooned again. The reason: he had no control over the donated food and regularly consumed soft drinks and sweet beverages.
For the authorities, it is clear that the diet provided by the devotees plays a central role. They now want to ask donors to offer brown rice and Riceberry rice. Simultaneously, sugary foods, soft drinks, and very sweet fruits are to be reduced. Only then can the risk of further complications be lowered.
Krankenhaus half nur kurz
Busamalee Muangchim, head of the responsible health hospital, confirmed the monk’s chronic obesity. Her team recommends a strict dietary change, increased exercise, adequate rest, and adherence to medication. The officials consider the monk a suitable candidate for bariatric surgery. He himself is highly motivated and has strong support from the temple and local residents.
For the surgery, a comprehensive physical and psychological examination is necessary. Therefore, the authorities are currently preparing for his admission to Ban Pong Hospital. There, the 34-year-old will receive specialist care and thorough evaluation. The coming weeks will decide his future.
