MAE AI, THAILAND – A drug smuggling operation ended in tragedy for a border gang after a confrontation with border police.
Gunfire on the village road
An operation in the Mae Ai district escalated late on June 16th following crucial intelligence. Informants revealed that the network Ban Na Muean was planning to transport a large drug shipment from the border region into Thailand’s interior. Special forces from the border police were deployed.
Around 8:30 PM, officers spotted a suspicious Honda CR-V with Chiang Rai license plates in Pong Hai village. When authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants fled and immediately opened fire to facilitate their escape. The exchange lasted only a short time before the suspects managed to flee.
2,800,000 pills in 14 bags
Once the gunfire ceased, law enforcement secured the area. Inside the vehicle, they discovered 14 specially prepared transport bags. Concealed within were over 2.8 million methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba.
In addition to the drug haul, police also found a 9mm handgun, a second vehicle, and two mobile phones. All of this equipment was seized by the officers. The evidence accounted for the immediate successes of the operation.
Escape ends fatally a hundred meters away
Following the brief but intense firefight, officers thoroughly searched the surrounding area. Approximately 100 meters from the vehicle, they discovered a lifeless individual. Police identified the man as belonging to the drug smuggling ring.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause of his death. His accomplices, however, remain at large. The police immediately initiated a manhunt and an expanded crime scene investigation.
Evidence heads to Mae Ai
The confiscated goods and weapons have been transferred by border guards to the local Mae Ai police station. Criminal forensic examinations and investigations into the entire network of masterminds will now take place there. The public prosecutor’s office is expected to review the legal proceedings.
The goal of the investigators is clear: to apprehend the remaining gang members and dismantle the entire smuggling network. The authorities emphasized their commitment to combating the flow of illegal narcotics.
