PHUKET, Thailand – A dispute over motorcycle riding habits escalated violently in Chalong, resulting in injuries for both a foreign tourist and a 50-year-old local man.
The incident occurred in Soi Ta-iad when a local man, identified as Waikun, confronted two foreign tourists about their riding in a manner he perceived as taking up too much road space. What began as a verbal exchange quickly devolved into a physical altercation.
According to Waikun’s account, the initial confrontation led to a physical fight. He stated the foreign tourist briefly left the scene but returned shortly thereafter on a motorcycle, armed with a long metal bar.
Muay Thai Instructor Defends Himself
Fearing further confrontation, Waikun retreated to his home, asserting that his intention was self-defense rather than aggression. When the tourist approached him again, the situation intensified.
During the ensuing confrontation, the aggressor sustained injuries. Waikun, identified as a Muay Thai instructor, also required medical attention.
Video Analysis and Public Pressure
Police intervened, separating the two men and facilitating their transport to the hospital for treatment. They also secured the items involved in the altercation. A video of the clash, posted on the Facebook page “Phuket Times,” circulated rapidly online.
The administrators of the page claimed the foreign man had previously threatened other individuals. Many online users are now demanding a thorough investigation and questioning whether the visitor intentionally provoked the conflict with his behavior.
Complaint Filed and Identity Unclear
Waikun has filed a complaint with the police, providing video evidence from witnesses. Investigators are currently analyzing the footage and considering further legal actions.
They noted that the identity of the injured foreign national has not yet been released. It also remains unclear if the tourist has filed a counter-complaint against the Muay Thai instructor. Police will decide on charges based on witness statements and the video evidence.
