BANGKOK, THAILAND – A British tourist whose dream trip turned into a year-long nightmare behind bars has spoken out about his ordeal.
Oliver Hardy, a 27-year-old heating engineer from Croydon, had saved for five years for what was meant to be the holiday of a lifetime. Instead, he experienced the brutal reality of Bangkok prison life. His troubles began when he sought to extend his stay in Thailand, falling victim to a sophisticated visa fraud scheme.
Five years saved, then complete collapse
Hardy arrived in Thailand in January 2023. His initial plan to enjoy palm trees and beaches soured dramatically when he was convicted of using fake immigration stamps and official documents, leading to his imprisonment. The situation escalated after he attempted to obtain a Muay Thai visa to prolong his stay.
1,200 pounds for a visa that never existed
His ordeal started when he paid 1,200 pounds in cash to an individual for a visa arrangement. However, the promised visa never materialized, and as his permit expired due to significant delays, Hardy realized he had been defrauded. This initial deception set in motion a downward spiral.
The next agency collected 1,800 pounds
In December 2023, Hardy sought further assistance from a visa agency in Pattaya, paying an additional 1,800 pounds. This agency arranged for him to travel through Southern Thailand, Malaysia, and Kuala Lumpur. He believed he had secured a valid 30-day visa upon his return to Bangkok, and its initial extension seemed to go smoothly, but this turned out to be a dangerous illusion.
Two mysterious stamps brought him down
The critical turning point occurred in February 2024 when Hardy flew from Bali to Bangkok to visit his sister. During immigration control, an official flagged two passport stamps that were not registered in the system and indicated nonexistent trips to England. Hardy was immediately subjected to interrogation and subsequently detained.
46 days in a cell with 120 men
Hardy’s first confinement was at the Immigration Detention Centre. He described spending 46 days in a cell shared with approximately 120 other inmates, detailing dire overcrowding and inhumane conditions. Hope for release was short-lived, as he faced further charges carrying a minimum sentence of nine years.
Injured with a plastic knife
He was then transferred to Bangkok Remand Prison, where he claims to have witnessed severe assaults, suicide attempts, and self-harm amongst prisoners. Hardy himself became a target of an inmate gang and suffered an attack, resulting in a permanent injury.
Drunk guards and wooden sticks
After about a year, Hardy was moved to Thon Buri Prison. However, his suffering continued. He alleged that drunk guards stormed cells and assaulted inmates with wooden sticks. Hardy stated he was personally beaten twice by intoxicated officers, though these claims remain officially unconfirmed.
Release and a new goal Brazil
Initially sentenced to two years and eight months, Hardy’s sentence was reduced to one year and four months after he pleaded guilty to visa document forgery. Following his release, Hardy left Thailand and is currently traveling through Vietnam. He documents his experiences on Instagram and aims to reach Brazil by the end of the year.
