Russia Warns Citizens Against Thailand Travel

Moscow cited US extradition cooperation as a reason for the urgent advisory.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Russia has issued a stern warning to its citizens, strongly advising against travel to Thailand due to concerns about potential extradition to the United States. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the urgent advisory on June 12, even recommending avoiding transit stays at Thai airports.

The ministry’s statement left no room for ambiguity. “We strongly advise Russian citizens who have even the slightest reason to believe that they may be the subject of criminal prosecution by US authorities not to travel to Thailand,” it stated explicitly.

Officials in Moscow cited a significant increase in American legal actions against Russian nationals since the commencement of the military operation in Ukraine four years ago. While Thailand maintains friendly relations, US intelligence agencies have allegedly already conducted operations against Russians within the country.

Der Fall Denis Obrez als Auslöser

This warning follows the arrest of alleged Russian hacker Denis Obrez. He was apprehended in Thailand in November and recently appeared before a US court.

For the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this appears to be evidence that Thailand has become a hunting ground for US investigators. The popular tourist destination is reportedly a location where Washington persistently pursues cases involving Russian citizens.

The Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) stated it had no prior knowledge of arrested Russian tour operators in Thailand. Nevertheless, the organization advised all citizens who fear legal complications in the US to strictly follow the Foreign Ministry’s instructions.

The warning has caused noticeable concern among tourism industry stakeholders. After all, Thailand welcomed nearly 1.9 million Russian visitors last year, the highest number from European countries.

Thailand kontert mit Fakten und Freundschaft

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded swiftly to the Russian travel warning. It emphasized that relations between the two countries remain strong in all areas of cooperation.

Bangkok also pointed to an upcoming milestone: in 2027, Thailand and Russia will celebrate the 170th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. This signals a clear intent not to jeopardize the partnership due to the current conflict.

Rechtssicherheit für alle Besucher

Thai officials made it unequivocally clear that Russian nationals in the country are under the full protection of Thai law. Legal proceedings are conducted according to the same standards, regardless of nationality.

The country continues to welcome visitors from all nations, including Russia. With nearly 1.9 million Russian guests in the past year alone, Thailand remains a desired destination, despite the grim warning from Moscow.
