KRABI, THAILAND – Krabi International Airport is set to become a major hub for airlines from the far north. In a significant development at the 158th IATA Slot Conference in Bangkok, Finnair and Scandinavian Airlines have presented concrete plans for direct flights. Tourists are expected to be able to travel non-stop to the Andaman Sea from Helsinki and Copenhagen starting with the Winter 2026/27 flight schedule.

The Department of Airports (DoA) used the international slot conference to showcase development plans for Krabi and Surat Thani airports. A key objective of the government’s “Airport for Regional Development” strategy is to transform airports outside of Bangkok into economic engines.
The interest from airlines was substantial, with 16 carriers engaging in discussions with Thai officials. These conversations focused on securing new slots and making schedule adjustments that would seamlessly integrate into the airlines’ network planning.

Among the interested parties were 14 airlines that currently fly to or plan to serve Krabi Airport in the future. Of these, ten are scheduled carriers responsible for a combined 98 weekly departures, supplemented by four charter operators.
The discussions indicated a growing perception of Krabi as a genuinely significant international transit point. The airport is considered to be infrastructurally prepared to compete on a global scale.
Finnair und SAS: Direkt aus dem hohen Norden
Two major Scandinavian airlines have submitted their applications. Finnair aims to operate twice-weekly flights from Helsinki to Krabi. Similarly, Scandinavian Airlines has proposed the same flight frequency from Copenhagen, Denmark.
“These routes will attract affluent visitors from Finland, Sweden, and Denmark,”
said Deputy Minister of Transport Phattrapong Phattraprasit. He noted that travelers from Northern Europe tend to stay longer and have a higher spending capacity.
Lukrative Wellness-Urlauber im Visier
Scandinavians have demonstrated a strong interest in wellness tourism, a sector the Deputy Minister believes will further cement Krabi’s status as a premier destination for this demographic.
Concurrently, traditional markets continue to show robust demand, with increasing interest from India and the Middle East. Local businesses and tourism operators throughout Southern Thailand are anticipated to benefit significantly from these trends.

DoA Director General Danai Ruangsorn reported that a total of 126 international flight applications were received for the period between October 25, 2026, and March 27, 2027. Krabi alone received requests from 14 carriers.
Finnair and Scandinavian Airlines are not the only new airlines showing interest. Oman’s low-cost carrier Salam Air and China’s Lucky Air have also indicated their intentions.

Danai Ruangsorn confirmed the commitment of both airlines, underscoring the continuing importance of the Asian market as a growth driver for regional airports.
