BANGKOK, Thailand – Skyrocketing jet fuel prices are forcing Thai airlines to drastically reduce flights, impacting both domestic and international routes and signalling higher ticket costs for travelers.

Escalating tensions in the Middle East have propelled the cost of jet fuel to two to three times its normal level. A barrel, previously around 80 US dollars, now exceeds 240 US dollars. This surge is dramatically inflating the operational expenses for airlines.
Fuel, once approximately 30 percent of a flight’s cost, now consumes over half the total budget. This financial pressure is compounded by the current low season, a period typically experiencing reduced passenger traffic.
In response, carriers are cutting frequencies, temporarily suspending routes, or cancelling services entirely. However, they are maintaining sufficient capacity on key routes to quickly scale up operations if prices fall and demand increases.

Thai Airways has announced the cancellation or consolidation of flights on a total of ten routes. These reductions primarily affect services to India, Taiwan, and China, with some suspensions extending through September. For instance, the Bangkok-New Delhi and New Delhi-Bangkok routes will be out of service for the entire month of June.
The Bangkok-Changsha route, in particular, faces a complete cancellation from June 1st to September 30th. Flights to Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, and Sapporo are also experiencing cancellations on numerous days.

Passengers flying with Thai Lion Air are facing significant disruptions, with the budget airline temporarily suspending operations or heavily reducing frequencies on a multitude of routes. The Don Mueang-Tianjin route will see no service from June 1st to July 31st.
Furthermore, the Don Mueang-Linyi service will remain grounded until the end of September. Other affected routes include those to Xi’an, Amritsar, Hefei, and Jinan. The Phuket-Singapore route will also experience drastic reductions from June to August.

Thai AirAsia is also implementing measures in response to the escalating costs. Numerous domestic connections departing from Suvarnabhumi are cancelled throughout June or have already been suspended for weeks. Affected domestic destinations include Buri Ram, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, Hat Yai, Krabi, and Surat Thani.
Internationally, routes to India such as Don Mueang-Guwahati, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad will be suspended, some until the end of October. Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bali are also heavily impacted by these capacity reductions.

Airlines have begun adjusting their fares and schedules to reflect the reduced capacity and increased operating expenses. Travelers should anticipate noticeably higher ticket prices in the coming months. Should fuel costs decline and demand rebound, the airlines intend to swiftly increase flight frequencies again.
Until then, the travel landscape remains challenging and expensive for passengers. The airlines are restructuring their fares and flight schedules to account for the elevated fuel costs. They are maintaining capacity on core routes and plan to increase frequencies should costs decrease and demand grow.
