KRABI-PHUKET, THAILAND – Seaplanes are poised to revolutionize travel in the Andaman region and beyond.
This year marks a significant advancement for tourism in the Andaman region, with the planned introduction of seaplane services between Krabi and Phuket. The initiative aims not only to attract luxury travelers but also to elevate Thailand’s standing as a regional aviation hub.
The Man for the Wet Adventure
Deputy Minister of Transport, Phatthaphong Phatthaprasit, has issued clear directives for the expedited implementation of this new project. During a visit to Krabi Airport, he urged all involved authorities and companies to accelerate their efforts. He has received strong backing from higher officials for this endeavor.
Vice Premier Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has appointed Phatthaphong to lead a newly formed committee tasked with streamlining the complex regulations surrounding seaplane operations. This committee is expected to provide crucial guidance and oversight.
A Committee for Clarity
This newly established “Strategic Integration Committee” is designed to bring all relevant stakeholders together for the first time. The goal is to ensure state agencies, aviation experts, and private investors are aligned and working collaboratively. The committee aims to establish binding guidelines, uphold the highest safety standards, and ensure prompt implementation of the project.
Procedures that typically take years to navigate are expected to be processed at an unprecedented pace through this committee. This collaborative approach is intended to overcome bureaucratic hurdles and accelerate the progress of the seaplane initiative.
Krabi Becomes the Test Stage
The province of Krabi has been deliberately chosen as the pilot location for this innovative service. Krabi Airport is designated to serve as the initial testing ground and the first permanent destination for the new seaplane routes.
The overarching plan envisions the entire region being reimagined as an “Airport for Regional Development.” This aims to create a seamless travel experience for tourists, allowing them to move between islands without the inconvenience of multiple transfers.
Two Companies, Two Start Scenarios
The timeline for Thai Seaplane is the most concrete, with Phatthaphong expecting test flights from Krabi to Phuket to commence by the end of this year. This company is positioned to be the first to launch operations.
Siam Seaplane requires a bit more time, as it awaits the outcome of a crucial environmental impact assessment. The company can only proceed with its operations once its IEE report has been approved.
High-Spending Tourists in Focus
This ambitious project is not geared towards budget travelers. The project leaders are specifically targeting “high-value tourists,” individuals with significant disposable income.
The seaplane experience is intended to offer both an exclusive travel encounter and significant time savings. This new attraction is expected to enhance Thailand’s competitive edge among premium travel destinations.
What Else is Attached?
The economic impact of this initiative is projected to extend far beyond the fare of the flights themselves. Aviation-related industries, hotels, restaurants, and various service providers are all expected to benefit directly from the increased tourism.
Planners also anticipate advantages for emergency medical services and maritime security. The smaller aircraft could prove invaluable in critical situations, potentially saving precious minutes.
“Accelerate, Please!”
To conclude, Phatthaphong left no room for delays. He issued unequivocal instructions to all relevant parties to accelerate preparations to ensure the service is operational by the end of this year (2026).
