Bangkok, Thailand – New Destination Thailand Visa offers remote workers a five-year stay option, but hidden requirements catch many young applicants off guard.
Das DTV: Was das Visum für junge Auswanderer leistet
The DTV allows multiple entries with up to 180 days per stay. Extensions cost 1,900 Baht and add another 180 days, enabling nearly a year without leaving. The visa targets remote workers for foreign employers, freelancers with international clients, and participants in Thai soft-power activities like Muay Thai or cooking courses. No work permit is needed as long as holders do not work for a Thai employer.
The fee stands at roughly 10,000 Baht (about 270 euros) for five years. Applications are submitted exclusively online through the Thai E-Visa Portal and must be filed from outside Thailand. Applicants already in the country on a tourist stamp are rejected.
Finanznachweis: 500.000 Baht — und das ist ernst gemeint
The financial proof requirement is 500,000 Baht (around 13,500 euros), which must have been in the account for at least three months. Sudden transfers are flagged by the embassy. Monthly salary does not count; only savings are accepted. Applicants under 30 often fail here. The minimum age is 20.
Steuerpflicht in Thailand ab 180 Tagen
Anyone staying more than 180 days per calendar year becomes tax-resident in Thailand, regardless of visa type. Since January 1, 2024, foreign income transferred to Thailand must be declared. Progressive tax rates range from 0 to 35 percent. The double-taxation agreement between Germany and Thailand prevents double payment but does not eliminate reporting obligations.
Savings accumulated before January 1, 2024, are tax-free when transferred. Those staying over 180 days should obtain a Thai tax number and consult a tax advisor.
Bankkonto in Thailand: DTV öffnet keine Türen
The DTV is legally classified as a tourist visa under Thai immigration law. Major banks including Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn, SCB, and Krungsri have stopped opening accounts for DTV holders since 2025. Without a local account, holders cannot pay rent locally, register utilities in their name, or provide a bank statement for visa extensions.
Digital services like Wise or Revolut work for daily payments but not for visa proof. To obtain a real Thai bank account, a Non-Immigrant visa is required — typically a Non-Immigrant B with a work permit.
TM30, TDAC und Meldepflichten nicht unterschätzen
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) must be completed online 72 hours before each arrival. Errors cannot be corrected after submission, and many airlines check the QR code at check-in. The TM30 report is the landlord’s responsibility, due within 24 hours of arrival. Holders should demand written confirmation and include the obligation in rental contracts if using property portals.
Krankenversicherung: ohne geht es nicht
Although not a mandatory condition for the DTV, health insurance is strongly advised. Treatment in a private clinic after a motorcycle accident can cost five to six figures in Baht. State hospitals are cheaper but overcrowded. An international policy for young adults costs 30,000 to 50,000 Baht per year, a manageable amount compared to potential expenses. Delaying insurance may lead to higher premiums or exclusion of pre-existing conditions.
Was jetzt zu tun ist
Applicants should start saving at least three months before applying, keeping 500,000 Baht steady in an account. Work evidence such as contracts, statements, and portfolios must be prepared. Apply only from the home country, not from Thailand. After 180 days, a Thai tax number becomes advisable.
