PATTAYA, THAILAND – The Thai government is pushing forward with the massive land bridge project at full speed. Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn sees the current global crises as a historic opportunity for the country.
Gigantic Investment for the South
Nearly 1 trillion baht is expected to be spent on the megaproject in the coming years. The government plans to build two modern deep-sea ports in Ranong and Chumphon.
A new highway and a double-track railway will directly connect these ports. The goal is a highly efficient logistics corridor between the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Safe Alternative to Crisis Zones
Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn positions the project as a strategic alternative to dangerous sea routes. Tensions in the Middle East and risks in the Red Sea are burdening global trade.
The Strait of Malacca is also considered overloaded and spatially limited. Thailand aims to massively reduce dependence on these risky chokepoints with the land bridge.
Decades-Long Debates Come to an End
“Thailand has debated projects like the Kra Canal for over 50 years without concrete progress. Now is the moment to make the land bridge a reality.”
said the minister, explaining the new urgency in implementing the project.
The cabinet is expected to deliberate on the next decisive steps as early as May.
Laws Pave Way for Billions
A new law for the southern economic corridor will guide development in four provinces: Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
A special fund will ensure financing through private investors. According to current plans, state budget funds will not be used for this fund.
Environmental Protection and New Jobs
Over the past four years, more than 60 public hearings have already taken place. Authorities are currently reviewing the environmental impact for the planned rail and highway routes.
The megaproject is expected to create over 200,000 new jobs within the country. The government is banking on global disruptions to now guarantee the project’s success.
