Massive Storm Front Threatens 33 Thai Provinces

Thai water authority warns of severe thunderstorms and flash floods from April 29 to May 1.

BANGKOK, THAILAND – A massive storm front is rapidly approaching Thailand, threatening 33 provinces with torrential rain starting Tuesday.

Authority raises alarm

On April 28, the Thai Office of National Water Resources issued a warning for a dangerous weather situation. The alert is effective from April 29 to May 1, 2026.

Cold air from China is colliding with extreme heat over the country, leading to severe thunderstorms and torrential downpours.

These provinces are threatened

The agency named 33 regions at high risk. In the north: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Tak and Phetchabun.

In the northeast and east: Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Chaiyaphum, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Si Sa Ket, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin and Ubon Ratchathani. Also affected are Nakhon Sawan, Lop Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo and Chon Buri.

Crops destroyed, roads under water

The floodwaters threaten agricultural crops and livestock. Farmers across the region fear for their livelihoods.

In cities, short-term flooding is expected, severely disrupting traffic and making roads impassable.

Hot air collides with cold front

The extreme heat of recent days has further heated the atmosphere. When this energy meets the incoming cold air, explosive weather conditions can develop.

The agency expects storms and localized heavy rain that can begin suddenly and unexpectedly.

Fear of the next blow

For many rural families, everything is at stake. Fields and animals are often their only possession. A heavy downpour can destroy everything in hours.

The authority urges caution – no one should drive recklessly through flooded streets.
