SAMUT SAKHON, THAILAND – A man in Samut Sakhon killed his father and was arrested hours later as police examined his mental state and possible charges.
Violent incident in Samut Sakhon residential area
A violent incident within a family occurred in a house in Thailand’s Samut Sakhon province. According to police, a 44-year-old man attacked his father. The 69-year-old Duan died at the scene from his injuries.
The attack was reportedly preceded by an argument over money. The suspect, Kritsada, had asked his father for cash to buy alcohol, but the father refused. The situation then escalated.
Arrest after brief manhunt
The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle after the incident. Surveillance cameras captured parts of his escape route. At around 3:50 p.m., witnesses recognized him at a kiosk and immediately alerted police.
Officers arrested the man about 500 meters from the kiosk. He was taken to the police station for initial questioning.
Suspect admits drug use
During interrogation, Kritsada stated that he had used methamphetamine before the incident. He was also said to have regularly consumed large quantities of alcohol. He claimed that his father had verbally provoked him beforehand.
Police ordered medical tests to assess the suspect’s condition at the time of the crime. The question of his criminal responsibility was considered decisive for the further course of the proceedings.
Family reports long history
The suspect’s mother told investigators that her son had shown psychological abnormalities for years. She said he had previously made threats against family members, but that his condition had stabilized after he reportedly stopped using hard drugs about ten years earlier.
Alcohol, however, was said to have made his behavior unpredictable. On the day of the incident, the family had earlier visited a temple together to celebrate the father’s birthday.
Charges and pretrial detention
The 44-year-old was held in pretrial detention. Prosecutors were considering charges of manslaughter or causing grievous bodily harm resulting in death. The possible sentence depended on the outcome of a psychiatric evaluation.
Family violence under the influence of drugs is among the frequently recorded categories of crime in Thailand. Social workers and authorities have pointed to a lack of outpatient support services for addicts in rural regions as a structural risk factor.
Investigation not yet concluded
The Krathum Baen police station led the investigation. According to officers, the suspect gave contradictory statements. Further witness interviews and analysis of camera footage were expected to clarify the sequence of events in full.
A verdict was not expected until all expert assessments had been completed. The public prosecutor’s office planned to decide on the final indictment once the results were available.
