PATTAYA, THAILAND – A powerful bang shattered the calm along the coast as two jet skis collided at full speed, seriously injuring several foreign tourists.
Multiple holidaymakers injured in high-speed collision
On a sunny Tuesday, the sea off a popular beach turned into an accident scene. Two high-powered machines crashed violently into each other in the middle of the water.
The foreign visitors were thrown into the sea on impact and suffered injuries. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to give the victims first aid on the sand.
Rescue teams push through dense tourist crowds
Municipal security forces first had to clear a path for paramedics along the packed shoreline. The heavy crowding on the beach made access for the arriving ambulance extremely difficult.
Volunteer rescuers from the Sawang-Boriboon Foundation immediately attended to the injured holidaymakers. After initial treatment at the scene, the victims were taken to a hospital for further care.
Investigators search for cause of the crash
Authorities kept the exact number of injured and the severity of their wounds confidential. It also remained unclear how many people had been on the jet skis.
Police and city officials began examining how the dangerous collision could have occurred. Driver error or possible technical defects in the rented machines were under discussion.
Heavy crowding raises safety concerns
The stretch of beach was regarded as one of the busiest watersports spots in the country. Especially during the current heat, thousands of people crowded into the shallow water and onto boats.
During holiday periods, the risk of such accidents increased significantly due to dense traffic at sea. Again and again, there were dangerous situations between swimmers and fast-moving jet ski riders.
