NAKHON RATCHASIMA, THAILAND – An unidentified man was found dead in the city moat near the provincial court early Tuesday, with police treating the case as a likely accident.
Body discovered in city moat at night
Around 2 a.m., witnesses alerted the police after discovering an unresponsive man in the city moat along Ratschanikul Road. The site lay in the historic old town, opposite a major railway junction.
Rescue workers recovered the man from the water, and a doctor confirmed his death at the scene. The body was then transferred to Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital for a forensic examination.
No initial signs of foul play
Officers at the scene initially found no evidence of foul play. A final assessment was left to forensic specialists, who were expected to determine the cause of death through detailed examinations.
Police secured the area and questioned nearby witnesses. Investigators reported no early indications of a dispute or altercation in connection with the incident.
Identity of the deceased still unknown
The man carried neither identification documents nor personal belongings. His identity therefore could not be established at the scene, and police initiated formal identification procedures.
According to local residents, homeless people regularly stayed in the moat area. It remained unclear whether the deceased belonged to this group.
Heatwave considered a possible factor
Investigators regarded a heat-related accident as the most likely explanation. In the days before the incident, temperatures in Nakhon Ratchasima had been significantly above the seasonal average, and the moat was known as a place where people sought relief on hot nights.
Medical professionals regularly warned during the summer months about the risks of staying near open bodies of water in extreme heat. Exhaustion and circulatory problems could become life-threatening even in shallow water, they stressed.
Forensic results to determine next steps
The outcome of the forensic examination at Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital was still pending. Once the cause of death was established, police planned to decide on further steps, including additional forensic investigations in the event of an unexplained death.
Authorities had not yet released any information on a possible identity of the man. People who could provide relevant information were asked to contact the responsible police station.
