BANGKOK, THAILAND – Human remains were found on the Thai-flagged freighter Mayuree Naree after three Thai crew members went missing following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz, with their identities still unconfirmed as Thailand coordinated identification efforts with authorities and partners.
Confirmation from the Foreign Ministry
The Thai Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday that human remains had been discovered on board the freighter Mayuree Naree.
The vessel sailed under the Thai flag, and the discovery was connected to three Thai seafarers who had been missing since an incident in March.
Incident in the Strait of Hormuz
The three crew members had been on board when the ship passed through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on 11 March and an incident occurred.
The Foreign Ministry had already issued an update on 30 March on the fate of the missing men, before the new findings were reported.
Second search by specialist team
According to the ministry, Precious Shipping, the ship’s owner, reported that a specialised search-and-rescue team contracted by the company had carried out a second search operation.
The team inspected all accessible areas as thoroughly as the conditions on board allowed.
Damage from fire and flooding
The Mayuree Naree had been damaged by a fire, and flooding was reported in the engine room and adjacent sections of the ship.
These conditions significantly hampered the search, as not all areas were safe or fully accessible.
Remains discovered – identity still unknown
During the operation, parts of human remains were found in damaged areas of the vessel.
Identification had not yet taken place, leaving it unclear whether they belonged to the three missing Thai crew members.
Families informed, authorities coordinate identification
The company had already informed the families of the three missing men about the latest discovery.
The Foreign Ministry expressed its condolences and said it was working closely with the relevant Thai embassies, Iranian authorities and other parties to speed up the identification process.
Call for diplomacy and safe shipping
The ministry urged all parties involved to return to dialogue and diplomacy in line with international law and the UN Charter.
It also underlined the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring safe maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
