KOH PHANGAN, THAILAND – Authorities on the island moved to have the visas of three US citizens revoked after deeming their behaviour a potential threat to public order.
Authorities tighten controls on Koh Phangan
District officials on Koh Phangan in Surat Thani province had intensified measures to enforce rules for foreign tourists. They focused on conduct they considered inappropriate or potentially disruptive to public order.
In this context, the district agreed to request the cancellation of the visas of three foreign visitors. Officials argued that their behaviour could, in their view, trigger unrest in the area.
Decision followed meeting led by district chief
The move followed a meeting chaired by Paisit Thongjerm, the district chief of Koh Phangan. He presided over the fifth 2026 session of the committee responsible for reviewing the conduct of foreign nationals in the kingdom for the Koh Phangan area.
Several agencies joined the session, including the immigration police, provincial police, tourist police, Special Branch officers, local administrative representatives and district officials. The committee examined the specific case and agreed on the next steps.
Details of the case
According to authorities, the individuals were three US nationals of Israeli ethnicity. They were accused of walking around with a flag bearing a religious symbol.
Officials also said the trio had allegedly used WhatsApp to call for the formation of a group and had distributed flyers to organise an activity in the Koh Tao subdistrict. The authorities assessed these actions as problematic in terms of maintaining public order.
Concerns among residents, tourists and businesses
Officials stated that the reported activities had caused concern among business operators, local residents and tourists. In an area heavily dependent on tourism, developments perceived as potentially conflictual were treated with particular sensitivity.
Authorities said the behaviour could lead to unrest in the region. Against this backdrop, the committee recommended that the visas of the three individuals be revoked.
Case forwarded to immigration police
The meeting resolved to prepare a report for submission to the commander of the Immigration Police. He would then decide on measures under the relevant laws and powers.
The final decision on concrete steps therefore rested with the immigration authorities. The Koh Phangan district office provided the documentation and its assessment of the case.
Officials promise continued monitoring to protect order
District officers stressed that they would continue working with all concerned agencies to monitor and safeguard public order. Their stated aim was to identify risks at an early stage and prevent disturbances.
They also sought to maintain confidence in safety for both residents and visitors. Koh Phangan, one of southern Thailand’s best-known tourist destinations, was seen as particularly reliant on a stable sense of security.
