NONG KHAI, THAILAND – Immigration officers and drug suppression units in the border province reported two major narcotics cases uncovered on the same day, involving 6 kilograms of crystal meth and a suspect linked to 3.4 million methamphetamine pills.
Border sweep yields two major cases in a single day
On 1 April, authorities in the northeastern province said the Nong Khai immigration office had carried out an operation targeting drug crime and wanted persons. Within the space of one day, officers reported two significant breakthroughs in separate investigations.
According to officials, the operation took place in areas near the border and focused on disrupting trafficking routes and apprehending fugitives. The results were presented as part of ongoing efforts to reinforce Thailand’s border security.
Early-morning check: suspicious man at roadside shelter
At around 5:00 a.m., an investigation team from Nong Khai Immigration noticed a man behaving suspiciously while sitting at a roadside shelter in the Ban Dong Wae area. Officers approached to question him based on his demeanor and the early hour.
The man was later identified as Mr. Desmond, a Nigerian national. He was detained at the scene so that officers could examine his belongings in more detail.
Suitcase search reveals over 6 kg of “ice”
During a search of a wheeled suitcase, officers found Category 1 narcotics, specifically crystal methamphetamine known as “ice,” with a total weight of more than 6 kilograms. The drugs had been concealed inside the luggage.
The narcotics were seized as evidence, and the suspect was taken into custody for further questioning. Authorities said they intended to expand the investigation to identify possible accomplices and the intended destination of the drugs.
Second arrest: wanted Thai woman handed over
At 9:30 a.m. the same day, Nong Khai Immigration and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), Region 4, took custody of a 32-year-old Thai woman from Bueng Kan province. Her surname was withheld for privacy reasons.
She was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Saraburi Provincial Court. The charges included alleged involvement in large-scale drug trafficking and offences with implications for public security.
Investigators: 3.4 million meth pills allegedly smuggled
According to authorities, the suspect was believed to have played a central role in a cross-border network in mid-2025 that allegedly brought more than 3,400,000 methamphetamine tablets into Thailand from a neighbouring country. The pills were reportedly moved onward to inland provinces inside Thailand.
Officials said the woman went into hiding after the shipment was distributed. Her disappearance prompted a wider search linked to the broader trafficking investigation.
Flight to Laos and return: arrest in Vientiane
The woman was believed to have fled to Laos and gone into hiding in the capital, Vientiane. Thai agencies said they worked closely with Lao counterparts to track her down.
She was eventually located and arrested in Vientiane, then transferred back to Thailand for prosecution. Upon her return, she was placed in custody at Mueang Nong Khai police station to face legal proceedings.
Authorities present operation as blow to drug routes
Officials described the arrests as the outcome of coordinated work by Thai security agencies and cooperation with a neighbouring state. They said the goal was to dismantle structures behind large-scale trafficking that threatens public safety.
