CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – Police arrested a 39-year-old man who allegedly scouted and robbed homes and rooms of foreign residents at night, seizing about 50,000 baht in cash and other items during the arrest.
Arrest after series of night-time thefts
Investigators from the Phuping Ratchaniwet police station in Chiang Mai province arrested a 39-year-old suspect from the Mae Taeng district. Police accused him of repeatedly committing night-time thefts.
The investigation was led by Pol. Col. Sinothai Lilittham. According to police, the man was being prosecuted on a charge of “theft at night using a vehicle.”
Foreigners targeted in rental homes and rooms
Authorities stated that the suspect was believed to have specifically chosen rental properties and rooms occupied by foreigners as crime scenes. The alleged offences were said to have taken place in several different properties.
Police described a method in which the perpetrator supposedly approached “stealthily” at night to steal valuables. In the most recent reported case, more than 50,000 baht in cash was believed to have been taken.
Cash, phone and clothing seized as evidence
During the arrest, officers reported seizing Thai banknotes worth about 50,000 baht. They also confiscated foreign currency.
Other items taken in as evidence included a mobile phone and clothing. The vehicle allegedly used in the crimes was also impounded as evidence.
Alleged escape on a red motorcycle
According to investigators, the man was said to have ridden a red motorcycle through various areas to scout for suitable targets. This motorcycle was also believed to have been used as a getaway vehicle.
Police relied on footage from surveillance cameras near the crime scenes during their search for clues. The recordings reportedly provided indications of the suspect’s route and method.
Complaints and victim reports triggered probe
The arrest followed several complaints from residents and victims filed at Phuping Ratchaniwet police station. The reports concerned night-time thefts in rental apartments and rooms.
After the most recent case involving a large cash loss, the investigation team intensified its search. The collected information ultimately led to the identification and arrest of the suspect.
