CHACHOENGSAO, THAILAND – Police in Chachoengsao seized nearly 10 kilograms of heroin hidden in seat cushions, allegedly prepared for a flight to Sydney, and detained a 45-year-old woman as investigations expanded into a wider smuggling route.
Drugs hidden in cartons of seat cushions
On the afternoon of 17 March 2026, officers searched a house in Tambon Khlong Luang Paeng in Mueang district and discovered cartons containing 44 seat cushions. Inside the padding, investigators found white powder that was later confirmed in a laboratory test to be heroin.
According to police, the total weight came to 9.496 kilograms, an amount they described as unusual even for experienced narcotics officers. The local value was estimated at more than 10 million baht, while authorities said the same shipment could fetch up to 70 million baht on the international market.
45-year-old suspect arrested over transport role
Officers arrested Siriporn Triwisesorn, a 45-year-old woman from the region, as the main suspect in the case. She allegedly collected the cushions from the property where they had been stored.
Police said she admitted that she had been recruited to transport the drugs and was supposed to pass them on via airline personnel. In return, she had reportedly been promised a payment of 50,000 baht for her role in the operation.
Tip from Suvarnabhumi Airport led to raid
The operation was triggered by information from the surroundings of Suvarnabhumi Airport, where a large drug shipment had previously been intercepted. Investigators believed that part of that consignment had been temporarily stored in Chachoengsao before being moved onward.
They decided to act when the suspect came to pick up the alleged shipment, assuming the heroin was intended for export on a flight to Sydney. Officers then moved in and secured the drugs and the seat cushions at the scene.
Provincial police and ONCB coordinated the operation
The raid was led by Pol Maj Gen Kriangkrai Boonsorn, chief of the provincial police, together with Pol Col Kittisan Chana and Pol Lt Col Nit Witinantakit. Units involved included the Provincial Police Investigation Unit 1, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) and the provincial forensic team.
According to Pol Col Kittisan, the suspect was being investigated for possession of Category 1 narcotics, in this case heroin. Authorities were simultaneously working to trace the supply chain, including those linked to the original shipment and any possible accomplices, in order to expose the structure behind the attempted export to Australia.
Debate over tighter controls and targeting masterminds
The case illustrated how professionally smugglers now concealed narcotics and how strongly international routes via airports and logistics staff had come into focus. It also raised questions over how far checks on cargo and ground personnel should be tightened, even if that made travel and shipping noticeably more cumbersome.
Some observers argued that the priority should be greater firepower against the masterminds behind such operations, rather than only increasing frontline controls. Others pointed to the Chachoengsao seizure as evidence that cooperation between airport sources, narcotics agencies and provincial police remained critical in disrupting international drug networks.
