KANCHANABURI, THAILAND – A diesel shortage in Kanchanaburi temporarily brought garbage collection to a halt on 17 March, forcing the city to suspend morning pickups and resume operations only in the afternoon.
Garbage trucks sidelined in the morning
On Tuesday morning, garbage trucks operated by the Kanchanaburi Municipality initially did not leave their depot because no diesel was available. The interruption affected the regular schedule and meant that household waste was not collected as planned.
The city had previously informed residents through a post on Facebook that there would be no regular garbage collection in the morning. The notice alerted people that the usual service would be disrupted for at least part of the day.
City flags partial service and possible full halt
The administration warned that waste could be collected in some neighborhoods but not in others. Officials indicated that coverage would depend on how far limited resources could be stretched under the fuel constraints.
At the same time, the municipality even raised the possibility of a temporary complete stop to garbage collection if the situation worsened further. This signaled that the disruption could move beyond isolated districts if diesel supplies tightened again.
Town hall blames disrupted fuel deliveries
According to town hall, the cause of the problem was an interruption in fuel deliveries within the province. The disruption affected the availability of diesel needed to keep the garbage truck fleet operating.
The issue was explicitly not described as a defect or breakdown of the vehicle fleet. Instead, it was framed as a supply disruption affecting fuel, underlining that the trucks themselves remained operational once diesel became available.
Afternoon restart brings only partial relief
Around 24 hours after its first announcement, the city stated in another notice that garbage trucks would be back on the streets on Tuesday afternoon. The restart was intended to clear at least part of the backlog that had built up during the morning suspension.
At the same time, officials made clear that further delays were still possible despite the resumption of service. The municipality cautioned that the underlying fuel situation had not fully normalized.
Warning of further delays
The statement included a direct warning to residents:
“Garbage collection could still be delayed as the fuel situation has not returned to normal.”
said the city administration.
With this message, the municipality emphasized that the diesel supply remained unstable. It also signaled that short-notice changes to the garbage collection schedule could not be ruled out until fuel deliveries were reliably restored.
