PHUKET, THAILAND – Thai immigration officers arrested a French man wanted worldwide for attempted murder after tracing him to a hideout in Rawai.
French embassy alert triggered manhunt
The investigation began when the French embassy in Bangkok contacted Thai authorities and requested assistance in tracking a fugitive. According to the alert from Paris,
“A wanted serious criminal is believed to be hiding in Phuket.”
said the French embassy, which prompted an immediate response from the Thai police.
Immigration officers in Phuket opened an investigation and started surveillance operations. Officers checked leads and followed every trace linked to the suspect’s possible presence on the island.
How officers captured the fugitive
Under the command of Police Lieutenant Colonel Adisorn Boonchum, officers placed a house in Rawai under close observation. Their patience paid off when, on a Friday, they confirmed that the man, identified only as “Faisal”, was inside the building.
The arrest operation was carried out swiftly and without incident. The 46-year-old French national had no chance to escape as officers moved in and detained him.
Confession during questioning
During questioning, Faisal admitted his identity as the man sought under an Interpol Red Notice. He described the events that had led to the charges against him in France, stating,
“There was an argument in France.”

Illegal stay in ‘paradise’
The suspect had entered Thailand on 23 January under a visa-exempt scheme, which would have allowed him to stay until 23 March. His stay, however, was cut short by the arrest and subsequent immigration action.
Phuket immigration officials immediately revoked his permission to stay on the grounds that he was a
“foreign national with an international arrest warrant.”
said Thai immigration. He was placed in immigration detention and now faces deportation back to France to face criminal proceedings.
Part of wider crackdown on fugitives
Authorities said the arrest formed part of a broader strategy to tighten the pursuit of foreign fugitives in Thailand. Immigration chief Police Lieutenant General Phanumas Boonyalak has intensified efforts to track down wanted foreigners hiding in the country.
“We will systematically track down and arrest transnational criminals who hide in Thailand,”
said Phanumas, immigration chief. Phuket, described as an international hotspot, has been placed under particular scrutiny, with a clear message that Thailand is not a safe haven for offenders.
What happens next for Faisal
The French suspect remained in immigration detention pending completion of formal procedures. Once the paperwork was finalized, he was to be deported to France, where he faced prosecution for attempted murder and the prospect of a long prison sentence.
For Faisal, the attempted escape from justice ended in handcuffs and a flight back to face trial. The case underlined the close cooperation between Interpol and Thai authorities, demonstrating that no hiding place is guaranteed safe for internationally wanted suspects.
