BANGKOK, THAILAND – Bangkok was voted the region’s most popular city by readers of DestinAsian magazine, finishing ahead of Tokyo and Singapore.
The victory came from a reader vote
A spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Ekwaranyu Amrapal, said on 9 March that Bangkok had secured first place through votes cast by DestinAsian readers from across the region.
Tokyo ranked second, followed by Singapore in third place.
Why Bangkok came out on top
According to the magazine, four key strengths decided the outcome of the vote and made Bangkok particularly attractive in the eyes of many travelers.
At the core were contrasts, food, the diversity of experiences on offer and a frequently cited sense of an especially open, service-oriented city.
Contrasts – temples beside skyscrapers
DestinAsian highlighted as a first strength Bangkok’s blend of strong cultural roots and a modern metropolis.
It praised, among other things, historic temples and floating markets on the one hand, and luxury malls and high-rise towers as symbols of the city’s global present on the other.
Food as the city’s calling card
Secondly, the city scored as an international food destination, offering a huge range from street food to high-end cuisine.
The magazine also emphasized a growing fine-dining scene in which a new generation of chefs experimented with progressive cooking.
Tailored travel – from boutique hotels to nightlife
Third, Bangkok convinced readers with the variety of travel experiences, ranging from ultra-luxury to award-winning boutique accommodations.
It added modern art districts, historic neighborhoods and a world-famous nightlife, which together made Bangkok an “all-in-one” destination for many visitors.
Friendliness as a success factor
Fourth, the magazine pointed to hospitality, which travelers experienced from tuk-tuk rides to check-in at five-star hotels.
It referred to the spirit of the “City of Smiles” and attentive service that, in its view, kept Bangkok in a leading position within the Asia-Pacific region.
City aims to build on the praise
“The award reflects global travelers’ confidence in Bangkok – as a city for fun, very good food, comfortable stays and a special charm in every corner.”
said Ekwaranyu Amrapal, spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
He said the recognition should provide additional motivation to further develop Bangkok as a destination that remained attractive for visitors while functioning sustainably for its residents.
