Peripheral vision check said to conflict with safe practice

He argued that this setup conflicted with real driving behaviour. In his view, a good driver never stares straight ahead but constantly scans the surroundings through continuous eye movements and slight head turns, meaning that forced fixation runs counter to natural and safe steering behaviour.

The motorist reported that he easily detected the signals through minimal, natural eye movements. For him, this outcome supported the practical relevance of active scanning more than the value of a rigid gaze as required by the test.

Call for tests closer to real road conditions

In his conclusion, the writer said he was pleased to have cleared the administrative hurdles for the next five years. At the same time, he argued that it was important to scrutinise these standardised procedures critically.
