CHOENG TALAY, THAILAND – A foreign diner in Phuket allegedly left a steak restaurant without paying after eating a costly meal, according to CCTV footage.
The incident on Tuesday evening
The case was made public on 4 March by the Facebook page Phuket Times, which reported that the incident took place on 3 March at around 9 p.m. in a steak restaurant in Choeng Talay. The page did not disclose the restaurant’s name.
According to the report, the situation was described as a classic “dine and dash” – eat, leave, and do not pay. The guest was identified only as a foreign man.
Premium steak, then towards the restroom
The man reportedly ordered the restaurant’s “premium” steak, weighing about 500 grams. After he finished his meal, he was said to have walked towards the restroom.
He allegedly did not return to his table after that. The bill for the meal was not specified in the report.
Exit through back door and getaway on motorcycle
According to the account on Phuket Times, the man left the restaurant through a door near the restroom area. He then reportedly rode away from the premises on a motorcycle.
Staff only realized later that the guest had disappeared and the bill remained unpaid. The report did not mention any confrontation or attempt to stop him.
What the camera shows – and what it does not
The published video showed the man sitting alone at a table before standing up and walking towards the rear of the restaurant, where the restroom is located, and then disappearing from view. The alleged exit and departure were not shown in the shared footage.
Later, a member of staff checked the table and initially appeared to expect the guest to return, apparently assuming he was still “in the restroom”. The moment when employees realized the bill was unpaid was not included in the video.
Recurring problem for island restaurateurs
Phuket Times recalled that this was not the first such allegation involving foreign tourists on the island. The page referred to cases from March of the previous year, which involved unpaid restaurant bills of 1,823 baht and 467 baht.
In January of the same year, a Russian couple was also accused of failing to pay in several restaurants. In some instances, they allegedly requested free food, citing a lack of money.
Criticism over lack of police follow-up
The post also raised questions about consequences in these cases. It claimed that in many earlier incidents, even when CCTV footage had been submitted, there were no publicly known updates on arrests.
It remained unclear from the report whether a police complaint had been filed in the current case or whether any investigation was under way. Authorities were not quoted in the account.
Not only restaurants affected
According to the report, unpaid bills were not limited to the restaurant sector. Entertainment venues in tourist areas were also affected by similar behavior.
Besides Phuket, locations such as Pattaya were mentioned, where foreign guests allegedly consumed alcohol and then disappeared without paying. The report did not provide figures on how frequently such cases occurred.
