Germany, Thailand deepen science alliance

Envoy visits Khon Kaen University to boost pandemic research and insect-based protein projects

KHON KAEN, THAILAND – Science over ceremony: German Ambassador Dr. Ernst Wolfgang Reichel visited Khon Kaen University to advance German-Thai research on pandemic preparedness and insect-based protein.

Berlin and Khon Kaen move closer together

German Ambassador Dr. Ernst Wolfgang Reichel sought not only diplomatic exchanges but concrete outcomes during his visit to Khon Kaen University. Together with university president Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, he discussed strategies to strengthen the academic bridge between the two countries. For the university in northeastern Thailand, Germany remained an important partner for new ideas.

A delegation of medical researchers, agricultural scientists and graduates of German universities welcomed the guest. These specialists formed the backbone of a network that combined Thai research ambition with German precision. Reichel praised the university as a regional hub that set internationally recognised standards.

Scientists join forces to track the next virus

One focus of the cooperation lay in the medical sector. The Faculty of Medicine worked closely with Heidelberg University Hospital. In the PANDA and PANDASIA projects, experts analysed how societies could better prepare for future waves of disease.

At the same time, these initiatives strengthened knowledge about biological threats in Southeast Asia. International foundations financed this exchange because they valued the global potential of the partnership. In this way, Khon Kaen developed into a forward position in the fight against global health crises.

Bioeconomy research heads for the dinner table

The ambassador was particularly impressed by the outlook for the future of agriculture. Researchers in Khon Kaen bred the black soldier fly as an alternative source of protein. What sounded like a niche topic to laypeople was regarded in the bioeconomy as an important step against global hunger.

The larvae of the flies converted waste efficiently into valuable nutrients. This method conserved resources and offered solutions for a growing world population. The project showed how applied research could move directly into the economy.

Artificial intelligence manages insect farming

Modern technology underpinned operations at the insect farm. The German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space supported the initiative. In a prototype factory, artificial intelligence optimised the industrial-scale production of the fly larvae.

Software controlled climatic conditions and monitored the growth of the insects. This combination of Thai biology and German engineering expertise created a new standard for sustainable business. Reichel toured the facility and called it a milestone for ecological transformation.

Ambassador seeks dialogue with the next generation

At the International College, Reichel spoke to hundreds of students about German-Thai relations. He described science and research as the true drivers of international contacts.

“Science and research are the real engines of international relations.”

said Reichel, German ambassador, as he urged his audience to contribute their own ideas to global exchanges.

The discussion was lively. Students wanted to know how they themselves could take part in exchange programmes. For the university, the visit marked an important step on its path toward becoming a leading international research institution in Asia.
