BANGKOK, THAILAND – The government extended the deadline for renewing work permits to 31 March 2026 to prevent large-scale loss of legal status and a surge in illegal employment, the Labour Ministry said.
High-level meeting at Labour Ministry
The Thai Labour Minister Treenuch Thienthong chaired meeting 2/2026 of the Foreign Workers’ Management Policy Committee in Bangkok, attended by senior officials from the Labour Ministry. Representatives from the Defence Ministry, Interior Ministry, Health Ministry, the Internal Security Operations Command, the National Security Council and the Thai Chamber of Commerce also took part.
Reasons for extending the deadline
The committee agreed to extend the deadline, originally set by the cabinet on 11 November 2025, for fulfilling all conditions related to work permit renewals until 31 March 2026. According to the ministry, ongoing hurdles in submitting proof of health insurance, completing mandatory health checks and paying the 900 Baht work permit fee continued to slow the process.
Risk of illegal employment for migrant workers
Workers from Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam had initially been required to meet all requirements by 24 February 2026, which would have pushed many out of the formal system and stripped them of legal status. Treenuch said that out of a total of 890,786 affected workers, 375,038 had not yet been able to complete the procedure, putting them at risk of being driven into illegal employment.
Impact on businesses and labour market
The minister warned that unresolved applications could have serious knock-on effects for employers and the wider economy.
“This could lead to foreign nationals being employed unlawfully, meaning that employers and businesses can no longer hire legally, which in turn would result in labour shortages in the corporate sector and affect production and national labour stability.”
said Treenuch Thienthong, Labour Minister. She added that the committee had carefully examined the reasons, necessity and potential consequences before approving the extension.
Next steps for the government
The Labour Ministry planned to submit the meeting’s outcome to the cabinet for further deliberation and final approval. At the same time, Treenuch instructed the Department of Employment to promptly draft a ministerial announcement granting a special permit for employing workers from Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam in line with the cabinet resolution of 11 November 2025.
