PATTAYA, THAILAND – Strong waves washed large amounts of marine debris along several kilometers of Jomtien Beach, prompting city authorities to step up cleanup operations to restore beach quality and ensure visitor safety.
Large-Scale Cleanup Along Jomtien Beach
The city’s Department of Hygiene and Environmental Resources under the Office of Natural Resources and Environment deployed teams of workers and heavy machinery along the shoreline to continually collect and remove the washed-up waste. According to Pattaya officials, the measures were set to continue until the beach was largely free of debris for swimmers and vendors.
Hazardous Objects in the Drift
Among the material that washed ashore were plastic fragments, styrofoam boxes, water bottles, driftwood and larger logs, as well as hazardous items such as iron nails. Observers on site reported that such sharp or bulky objects could pose a risk of injury to people swimming in the water or walking barefoot along the shoreline.
Monsoon Conditions Blamed for Trash Influx
The city attributed the current surge of waste to seasonal monsoon conditions, during which prevailing winds and currents in March and April drove debris from more distant marine areas toward the coast. Beach vendors and bathers stated that this phenomenon occurred regularly during rough seas and sometimes discouraged visitors from swimming when visible trash and potentially dangerous objects were floating in the water.
Authorities Urge Shared Responsibility
In a public appeal, those responsible in Pattaya called on residents and visitors across the country to take more co-responsibility for the environment and to refrain from throwing rubbish into the sea, dumping it secretly on public land or littering in other ways.

Ongoing Task of Beach Maintenance
The city administration emphasized that the current operation at Jomtien Beach was part of continuous beach maintenance, through which Pattaya had long been tackling recurring accumulations of marine debris. Even after the conclusion of the present large-scale effort, regular cleanups and inspections were planned to keep the beach attractive for tourism and to minimize risks posed by washed-up waste.
