German influencer injured in Krabi monkey attack

Social media star juliabeautx needed hospital treatment after being bitten on a coastal path in southern Thailand

KRABI, THAILAND – A German influencer was injured when several monkeys attacked her on a coastal path popular with tourists in Thailand’s Krabi province.

Influencer bitten on monkey-lined coastal path

German influencer Julia Willecke, known online as juliabeautx, recounted the incident during a recent solo holiday on a beach trail known for its many monkeys. She said she needed medical treatment, including a vaccination and antibiotics, after one of the animals bit her calf.

From playful baby monkey to sudden swarm

Willecke, who reaches more than four million followers on Instagram under the name juliabeautx, said she had been walking alone when a “sweet little baby monkey” ran towards her, climbed up her and ended up sitting on her head, a scene that was filmed and later posted on Instagram. She said the situation then changed abruptly when, in her words, “suddenly four other big monkeys” ran at her and surrounded her from several sides.

Multiple animals clamber on her body

One monkey climbed up and settled on her shoulder and began fighting with the young animal on her head, while another clung to her thigh. Willecke described the moment as increasingly threatening as she was pressed by several animals at once on the narrow beach path.

Painful bite from “grandpa monkey”

She found the most frightening moment was when a primate she referred to as a “big old grandpa monkey” clamped its jaws onto her calf and did not let go. The animal latched completely onto her lower leg and, as she described it,

“just bit really hard into my calf, out of nowhere,”

said Julia Willecke, influencer, adding that she could hardly defend herself in that situation.

Discoloured wound prompts hospital visit

At first Willecke did not consider the bite to be serious, but became worried when the puncture site changed colour noticeably and, in her words,

“looked like someone had given me a huge hickey, but really disgusting,”

said Julia Willecke, influencer. She reported that she then went to a hospital where, according to People.com, she was given a vaccination, treated with antibiotics and discharged with a prescription for further medication within about 30 minutes, with no lasting injuries.

Attack revealed later on her podcast

Willecke only made the attack public in the 30 January episode of her podcast “Die Nervigen”, which she co-hosts with Josef Buchholz and where she recounted details of her solo holiday. There she also described how she eventually “totally freaked out” over the discolouration of the bite wound before deciding to seek medical care.
