PATTAYA, THAILAND – A Valentine’s Day ceremony in the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden saw couples register their marriages on the backs of elephants, blending romance, Thai tradition and the country’s new marriage equality law.
Elephant-back marriages in tropical setting
The special event, titled “Marriage Registration on Elephant Back”, took place on 14 February in the Sky Garden of the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Chonburi province. It began at 9:09 a.m. and welcomed couples from across Thailand and from abroad who wanted to formalize their marriage in a culturally rich environment.
Officials preside as ceremonial witnesses
The ceremony was chaired by Naris Niramaiwong, governor of Chonburi province, who served as honorary master of ceremonies. He was joined by Phatthanant Khantisukphan, general manager of Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and representative of garden director Kampon Tansatcha, Natthawut Anuyotha, district chief of Sattahip, and Pol. Col. Khomsan Khamtuenkaeo, head of Sattahip Police Station, who acted as official witnesses.
Procession of nine elephants and inclusive marriages
The highlight of the day was a festive procession in which nine couples rode on nine elephants through the garden, accompanied by a traditional Thai “khan mak” parade. More than 100 staff members of the garden staged the spectacle amid the tropical vegetation, while in total over 100 registered couples completed their marriage documents under the marriage equality law that had allowed same-sex marriages since early 2025, presenting an image of an inclusive society.
Soft power strategy for high-end tourism
Nong Nooch Tropical Garden designed the format to link romantic experiences with authentic Thai culture and high-quality tourism. Key elements of national soft power were showcased, including Thai elephants, traditional parades, performing arts and the backdrop of one of the country’s most renowned botanical gardens, which spans more than 1,700 Rai and features over 60 themed zones.
Perks and experiences for participating couples
Participating couples received free access to all areas of the garden and were able to explore the grounds extensively. The park also offered elephant rides during registration and provided lucky plants as souvenirs, while the garden remained open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with further information available via its official website.
