Hotel Worker Sprayed Couple at Shrine, Then Hit

Alleged assault at Pattaya spirit house fueled debate over respect for religious sites and public behavior

PATTAYA, THAILAND – A foreign man allegedly assaulted a hotel employee after being sprayed with water while having sex with a companion beside a spirit house outside the property, sparking debate over respect for religious symbols and public conduct.

Alleged assault after sex act at hotel spirit house

The 41-year-old Cambodian worker Piatra from the Dream Hotel Pattaya said he noticed the couple on the night of 9 February having sex next to a spirit house in front of the hotel on Pattaya Sai Song Road in Bang Lamung district. He told Channel 8 he had been watering plants outside the hotel when he became aware of the situation.

Mat and candles at site seen as spiritually sensitive

According to his account, the foreign pair had spread out a mat in front of the small shrine and lit candles to create a private atmosphere. They were reportedly in a narrow space between a flowerpot and the spirit house, a spot commonly regarded as spiritually significant and in need of protection.

Water spray, argument and alleged physical attack

The hotel employee stated that he asked the couple to leave and sprayed them with a hose to stop the public act, which led to a verbal dispute. The foreign man then got dressed, approached him and allegedly attacked him before leaving the scene, Piatra said. No detailed information was provided about possible injuries.

Video posted online to highlight “inappropriate” behavior

“I filmed the scene and later posted the video online because I wanted to draw attention to inappropriate behavior in sensitive public areas.”

said Piatra, hotel employee.

He also voiced a suspicion that the couple might have been trying to make sexually explicit recordings, stressing that this was only his personal view and that there were no official indications to support it.

Hotel plans more lighting after repeated misuse

The staff member said the area around the spirit house had already attracted negative attention in the past. He had previously found used condoms there and observed that people repeatedly misused the secluded corner.

Following the incident, he said hotel management planned to install additional lighting to make the location more visible and prevent similar situations in the future. The measure was intended to deter further misuse of the area around the spirit house.

Similar tourist sex cases in Phuket and Jomtien

In a similar case the previous week, a French couple was deported and placed on a blacklist after a video showed them having sex on a tuk tuk in Phuket. The month before, two tourists from Russia were fined after being found having sex on camping chairs on Jomtien Beach, with authorities citing existing public decency regulations.

Debate over tourist behavior and respect for sacred sites

The latest case reignited discussion about appropriate visitor behavior in tourist destinations. Many locals viewed the use of religiously influenced places for private or intimate acts as disrespectful.

“Local voices are calling for stronger preventive measures, such as better lighting, clearer guidance on rules of conduct and, if necessary, more consistent enforcement of existing regulations, while authorities emphasize that conflicts should be resolved in a de-escalating manner and physical confrontations must be avoided.”

said local commentators, summarizing the debate.

According to those involved, the case continued to be discussed, and it initially remained unclear whether further legal steps would follow.
