BANGKOK, THAILAND – Opposition figures in Thailand questioned the transparency of the Bhumjaithai Party after it formally submitted only eight election pledges to the Election Commission, leaving several flagship infrastructure projects off the record.
Opposition challenges limited pledge list
Deputy Democrat leader and prime ministerial candidate Korn Chatikavanij publicly asked on Friday why documents filed by Bhumjaithai listed only eight core policy points. He said this short list appeared to contradict the numerous promises the party had promoted during its campaign to win votes.
Ethical responsibility and public scrutiny
Korn stressed that the issue was not only a possible legal matter but above all an ethical question of political responsibility.
“Key initiatives of a party must be disclosed so that the public can critically examine their substance and feasibility,”
said Korn Chatikavanij, deputy leader of the Democrat Party.
Major projects missing from official filings
He was particularly critical that national megaprojects such as the advertised land bridge scheme, the planned Andaman airport, the ring road in Hat Yai and the expansion of the Rama I canal did not appear in the papers submitted to the commission. Korn argued that any party claiming the mandate to govern the country had to set out clearly how such projects would be implemented and from which sources their financing would be drawn.
TV debate sparks intensifying dispute
The controversy flared after a public panel hosted by broadcaster Channel 3 in Bangkok on Thursday focused on the parties’ election platforms. During the programme, Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva asked Bhumjaithai economic spokesperson Suphajee Suthumpun how credible the announced measures were if they did not appear in the party’s official submissions to the Election Commission.
Questions over Anutin’s leadership capacity
Abhisit said he did not fundamentally doubt the personal intentions of Suphajee and other prominent BJT figures such as Sihasak Phuangketkeow and Ekniti Nitithanprapas.
“The question is how much of these plans can actually be implemented under the political leadership of Anutin Charnvirakul,”
said Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, bringing Bhumjaithai’s internal capacity to steer and deliver its agenda into focus.
Voters weigh big promises and scarce detail
The debate unfolded against the backdrop of billion-baht infrastructure announcements that many voters expected to be backed by clear planning and transparent funding details. Critics warned of empty campaign promises as parties competed for public trust and confronted rising demands for full disclosure of major policy commitments.
