PHUKET, THAILAND – The island province hosted a senior Russian delegation to advance tourism, economic and cultural ties with Vladivostok.
High-level Russian delegation received in Phuket
Phuket Governor Nirun Phongsitthavorn received Russian Consul General Igor Ivanov and representatives from Vladivostok for talks in the province this week. According to the provincial administration, the meeting focused on a long-term partnership aimed at jointly promoting tourism, culture and economic development.
More than one million Russian arrivals
The visit took place against the backdrop of Phuket recently recording more than one million arrivals by Russian visitors. Authorities viewed the strong influx as evidence that the island, with its tropical climate, remained highly attractive to Russian travelers, especially during the winter months.
Plans for additional direct flights
The Russian side signaled during the talks that it was ready to significantly expand cooperation between public agencies and the private sectors of both countries. A central proposal was to introduce additional direct flights between Phuket and Vladivostok to ease travel and better accommodate growing peak-season demand.
Focus on long-term cooperation
Governor Nirun stressed that Phuket was determined to deepen its ties with Vladivostok because lasting cooperation would benefit both sides. The discussions also covered opportunities for cultural exchange and economic projects, including joint activities and exhibitions to strengthen links between the two communities.
Debate over dependence on one market
The strong growth in Russian arrivals and the push for even closer cooperation raised questions about how heavily Phuket should rely on a single tourism source market.
