PATTAYA, THAILAND – A once-quiet cove in Pattaya turned into a tourism hotspot and sparked a dispute over commercial use and public access.
Formerly quiet cove draws growing crowds
For years, the so‑called Hidden Beach at Wong-Amat Beach in Naklua had been regarded as a tranquil spot with little hustle, sea breeze and a relaxed atmosphere. Recently, however, large numbers of visitors had begun flocking to the once low-profile stretch of coast, putting its reputation as a retreat under pressure.
City deploys officials to protect calm atmosphere
The Pattaya city administration sent officials to the popular section to monitor cleanliness, safety and order. According to the city, the aim was to preserve the area as a quiet alternative to busier hotspots such as Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach.
“The idea is to offer people a place where they can relax without being crushed by mass tourism.”
said a city official in a paraphrased statement. Yet the very mass tourism they wanted to avoid now appeared to be emerging, driven by the growing popularity of the Hidden Beach.
Social media turns secret spot into magnet
What had once been known mainly to locals was now circulating widely on social networks. Photos of sea views, calm sunsets and shady areas triggered a surge in interest, with many users asking online for directions and announcing visits.
Criticism over loss of “hidden” character
As attention increased, so did criticism in comments about the beach no longer being truly hidden. In particular, the growing number of sunbeds, umbrellas and seating areas drew complaints from users unhappy with the expanding commercial footprint.
Rising prices and shrinking free space
The main point of contention was commercial pressure on the limited strip of sand. Visitors reported high rental prices for loungers and umbrellas, while available free space on the beach was said to be shrinking, leaving those who simply wanted to lay out a towel feeling pushed aside.
“People should still be allowed to lie down here for free without having to rent anything.”
said a local resident. Similar developments at Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach were cited as examples where affordable recreation had become increasingly difficult.
Fears of overcrowding and loss of access
Observers stated that the situation had not yet fully escalated and some visitors still described the atmosphere as pleasant. At the same time, they issued clear warnings that without firm rules, Hidden Beach risked the same fate as other stretches of coast, namely overcrowding, commercialization and stress.
City promises to heed public feedback
The city emphasized that it intended to take public feedback seriously. Officials said the goal was to promote new leisure areas without sacrificing public accessibility, though it remained uncertain whether this balance could be achieved.
