MAE SOT, THAILAND – A well-known LGBTQ TikTok influencer was found dead in a forested area near Mae Sot as police investigated a suspected planned robbery murder.
Body of influencer discovered in remote forest
Police in Mae Sot said officers were called on 20 January to a site near the village of Phathong in Mae Tao subdistrict, where they discovered the body of a man in a grassy forest area close to an access road to a well-known factory. The victim was identified as Ko Tin Zaw Htwe, 25, an LGBTQ TikTok influencer with more than 159,000 followers who had built a loyal online community in recent months by sharing his life and experiences as part of Thailand’s LGBTQ community.
Evidence points to violent crime
According to police, the death was attributed to a violent crime, and traces at the site indicated a confrontation. Investigators collected several items for forensic examination, including an alcohol bottle, the victim’s shoulder bag and personal belongings such as cosmetics, a bank book and other scattered possessions, which they said suggested a struggle or abrupt altercation in which the victim may have tried to defend himself.

People close to Ko Tin Zaw Htwe told police he had left his accommodation on the night of 18 January after receiving a call via social media from someone asking for help or requesting a meeting, and he did not return. When he could not be reached the following day, friends raised the alarm, while investigators concluded that the attacker had deliberately chosen the forest, describing it as isolated, surrounded by bushes and far more secluded than the victim’s residential area, which they said indicated a pre-planned act to lure him to a place where no witnesses were expected.
Missing valuables support robbery motive
Several valuables belonging to the influencer were reported missing, including gold jewelry such as a necklace, rings and a bracelet, as well as an iPhone 17, leading police to examine robbery as the likely motive and to consider that the attacker may have selected the victim because of his social media presence. A police spokesperson stated that officers believed the perpetrator used social media contact to lure the victim to the remote site and that the fact the meeting did not take place at the influencer’s accommodation but in a hard-to-see forest area pointed to a carefully considered plan.
