PHUKET, THAILAND – A 25-year-old Russian man was arrested on the resort island on suspicion of belonging to a cybercrime gang, after police seized assets worth several hundred thousand baht.
Police operation targeting technology-related crime
The arrest formed part of a broader operation against technology-related crime led by Maj. Gen. Sinlert Sukhum, the acting provincial police commander. Officers from Kathu Police Station and the Phuket provincial investigation unit had previously received reports of suspicious financial transactions.
Unusual ATM withdrawal triggered inquiry
On 12 January 2026 at around 5 p.m., Kathu police became aware of an unusually high cash withdrawal of 110,900 baht from a Siam Commercial Bank ATM. Investigators treated this report as the starting point for further action.
Search in Kathu uncovered dozens of phones
On 15 January 2026 at about 2 p.m., officers executed a search warrant issued by the Phuket Provincial Court at a previously identified property in Kathu district. There they identified Russian national Kairat Zhumagaliev and Thai citizen Phatsaporn Permphon.
During the search, police seized extensive electronic equipment and valuables, including 34 mobile phones and 27 bank and ATM cards. They also confiscated one MacBook computer, 60,000 baht in cash, a motorcycle, a gold bracelet and a gold bar weighing 1 salung (3.811 grams).
Investigators linked these items to suspected fraud and cyber offenses in which digital infrastructure and cash withdrawals played a central role.
Arrest warrant and transfer to investigators
On 17 January 2026, officers from Kathu Police Station, provincial investigators and the Phuket immigration office arrested the 25-year-old under a warrant issued the same day by the Lampang Provincial Court. The suspect was detained in a condominium in Kathu district.
Police transferred him, along with the seized evidence, to investigators in Kathu for further criminal proceedings.
Allegations of fraud and computer crime
According to police, the man faced several charges. He was accused of jointly committing fraud to the detriment of the public and of knowingly inputting false computer data into systems to cause damage to the public.
Authorities viewed the case as part of their intensified crackdown on cybercrime in the island area.
