YALA, THAILAND – An eight-hour gun battle in the southern province of Yala ended with a suspected militant leader dead and security forces on high alert for possible retaliation.
Eight-Hour Gun Battle in Ban Pohyani
In the early hours of Tuesday, police and military units stormed a house in the village of Ban Pohyani to arrest Nasruloh Sama (37), a suspect wanted nationwide. A first exchange of fire began shortly after midnight, followed by a second clash at around 3:50 a.m. Despite mediation attempts by local leaders, the suspect did not surrender.
The shooting stopped only after eight hours of intermittent gunfire. Security forces later found Nasruloh Sama dead inside the house, with a rifle lying beside him.
Suspected Role in Coordinated Fuel Station Attacks
The dead man had been on a national wanted list, with four arrest warrants issued against him. The most serious allegation was his suspected involvement in coordinated bomb and arson attacks on 11 PTT fuel stations.
These attacks on 11 January had spread fear in the three southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. Authorities regarded him as one of the key planners behind the operation.
Accusations Linked to 2019 Mass Killing
Nasruloh was also accused of involvement in an ambush in 2019 described by officials as particularly treacherous. In that incident, 15 village defence volunteers and a married couple were killed.
The case formed part of a broader pattern of violent attacks in the region, targeting security volunteers and civilians alike.
Security Forces Brace for Possible Retaliation
The killing of the alleged leader was seen as a heavy blow to militant networks in the deep south. At the same time, security officials warned it could trigger further attacks.
Police and the Fourth Army Area immediately and significantly tightened security measures across the three restive provinces. Authorities expected possible revenge operations by extremist groups and kept forces on the highest state of alert.
Authorities Signal Tougher Approach
The long and risky operation was viewed by observers as evidence of a new determination by Thai security authorities. They were now moving more aggressively against suspected leaders of militant networks.
By removing an alleged key figure, they hoped at least to complicate the planning and execution of further attacks. Whether this step would curb violence or fuel a new escalation was expected to become clear only in the coming weeks.
Long-Running Conflict in Thailand’s Deep South
The southern border provinces of Thailand had been the scene of a separatist conflict for decades. Repeated attacks on state institutions, killings and bombings had left the population in a state of chronic insecurity.
Security forces faced the challenge of protecting civilians while at the same time trying to dismantle entrenched militant structures. The deadly confrontation in Yala was described as another bleak chapter in a prolonged and complex conflict that continued to shape daily life in the deep south.
