PHUKET, THAILAND – A security employee at a Phuket beach resort was released on bail after allegedly trying to break into a Thai DJ’s hotel room at night.
DJ’s viral video triggers police investigation
Thai DJ Mirinda Malinrattanawadee made the 16 January incident public when she posted a video on Facebook that quickly went viral. The footage showed a man calling outside her door and then attempting to open it with a master key, with only the internal latch stopping him from entering. Her post led to the rapid identification and arrest of the 39-year-old suspect Kanisorn, a member of the hotel’s security team.
Hotel clarifies security role of suspect
At first, Kanisorn was described as the head of security, but the Holiday Inn Resort later corrected that his official title was Loss Prevention Supervisor. His duties included preventing theft and ensuring guest safety, and media reported that he was a former soldier. Police confirmed that surveillance footage showed him checking several room doors on the same floor before ringing the DJ’s bell.
Court grants bail despite serious charge
Prosecutors brought charges of attempted night-time burglary of a dwelling, an offence punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine. Nevertheless, the Phuket Provincial Court on 19 January approved his provisional release on bail of 50,000 baht (about 1,250 euros). The court ordered him to wear an electronic ankle monitor, report regularly to authorities and comply with additional conditions.
Motive unclear, concerns over hotel security
Investigators refrained from speculating about the motive, leaving open whether it involved theft, a sexually motivated assault or something else. The fact that the man carried a master key and systematically checked rooms alarmed guests and security experts. Trust in hotel safety was shaken, and many questioned whether this was an isolated incident or a sign of a broader systemic problem.
Hotel response and online backlash
The Holiday Inn Resort had not yet given detailed information on personnel consequences but stressed its cooperation with police. On social media, a heated debate erupted over the safety of hotel guests, especially women travelling alone. The quick release on bail was widely criticised and, for many, raised doubts about law enforcement in tourist areas.

Security specialists advised travellers to maintain basic precautions even in well-known hotels, always using the internal door latch or security bolt. They recommended that guests immediately inform hotel management of any suspicious behaviour and call the police via 191 if necessary. The case underscored that the greatest danger can sometimes come from those who are actually tasked with protecting guests.
